When the first pair of Air Jordan 3s landed in 1988, they marked a turning point for the iconic sneaker line. Tinker Hatfield, today a legend of the Nike design team, had poured all his creativity into reimagining what a basketball shoe ought to be, pulling out all the stops for his debut work on the Jordan brand. This decade is remembered as the transitional period from retro to modern, and this is apparent with Jordan 3 trainers, which feature elements such as self-lacing and a visible Air unit. Interestingly, the J3 was also the first of its kind to sport the Jumpman logo (depicting NBA star Michael Jordan in a dunking pose), simultaneously swapping the side-profile Swoosh for a heel-placed Nike Air symbol. This was not the only innovation, however; the upper gained lots of attention from sneakerheads because of its elephant-print accents, which complemented the leather used throughout the bulk of the shoe. It’s no surprise, then, that we continue to see new colourways and re-releases on sale.
